Chelmsford Theatre
The Chelmsford Theatre underwent a comprehensive refurbishment, transforming both The Cramphorn and The Civic Theatres into modern, inviting spaces. The project aimed to revamp various areas, including foyers, bars and toilets to enhance accessibility and create a venue that could be open to the public throughout the day.
Key Works:
- Foyer & Public Areas: the foyers and front-of-house areas were entirely redesigned, resulting in a cohesive and stylish aesthetic that unites the two theatres for the first time. The new design not only improves the visual appeal but also enhances the functionality, making these spaces more welcoming and accessible to a broader audience.
- Theatre Upgrades: the refurbishment included the installation of new carpets, an upgraded sound system and the introduction of a state-of-the-art box office. These improvements have modernised the theatres, providing a “cultural living room” where the public can socialise, learn and enjoy various forms of entertainment
- Bar & Event Spaces: the ground floor theatre bar was transformed into a flexible, contemporary space capable of hosting small events, including music performances, stand-up comedy, and children’s activities. This upgrade adds versatility to the venue, catering to a wider range of events and audiences
- Café and Al Fresco Dining: a new café was created at the front of the building, featuring wraparound windows and outdoor seating on the pavement. This addition offers a vibrant, al fresco experience, encouraging more daytime visitors and enhancing the theatre’s role as a community hub
